Yanartas flaming rocks. Yanartas is the Turkish word for flaming rocks, and in this context it refers to this geological feature near the town of Citali, south-west of Antalya on the southern coast of Turkey. Here, on a hillside, flames flare up from crevices and vents in the rock. The gas that ignites is methane, originating mostly from organic material in underlying sedimentary rocks. In ancient times this area was named Chimera, a fire-breathing monster in Greek mythology.
