Seattle, Wash.—At the late general election a bond issue of $500,000 was voted for the acquisition of additional parks, parkways and playgrounds. Elgin, III.—Wm. H. Hesse, who has been engaged in the nursery business ever since coming to this city nearly 25 years ago, died at his home April 21. He was 78 years of age. Southern California nurserymen have had and still have a fine trade. All conditions were favorable during the winter and spring and the country is being settled as rapidly as ever by a people disposed to beautify their homes. Bangor, Me.—The Maine Nursery Co., with a capital stock of $25,000, has been incorporated. The directors are: F. L. Temple, H. W. Mayo, F. H. Damon, H. C. Whitmore, Kate R Whit- more, W. C. Blanchard, G. W. Smith, and M. Farnham. Painesville, Ohio.—Mrs. Robert George, wife of the general manager of the Storrs & Harrison Co., was in San Jose at the time of the earthquake and did not escape without some exciting ex- periences. This has been a rush season in the nursery business and there is much to do yet. Bay City, Mich.—Postmaster Lusk has begun long deferred improvements on the federal grounds. The contract calls for the planting of more than 500 varieties of permanent shrubs, and the entire outer border will be lined with elm trees. The contract is in the hands of T. G. Phillips, landscape architect of this city. Davenport, Ia.—Negotiations are pending for the sale of the Nichols & Lorton
