Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) with his wife, Julia Boggs Grant (1848-1902), and son, Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912), in 1864. During the American Civil War, Grant became the commander of all northern armies. Later be became President of the United States. Years later, when he found out he was dying, he wrote his autobiography, which sold extremely well, thereby supporting his family for decades.
