Carpentras, Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France: under a blue sky, golden reflections blend with curved shadows at the end of the glazed barrel-vaulted roof crowning Passage Boyer, the ‘street of glass’ built by the unemployed in the mid-19th century. It is now a fashionable and elegant all-weather mall contrasting with the retail outlets under medieval arches in nearby Rue des Halles. The ‘rue vitrée’ was built by the Ateliers Nationaux or National Workshops, publicly-funded organisations revived by the provisional government of the Second Republic to provide work for the jobless amid the industrial crisis resulting from the February Revolution of 1848. The glass roof is supported by arches and an iron frame 90m (295 ft) long and 5m (16 ft) wide. Passage Boyer is named after Carpentras goldsmith Jean Boyer, a prominent citizen who bought and subsequently demolished the properties that lined the original street here in order to create the covered arcade.
