José Saramago (1922-2010) was the only portuguese Nobel Prize Winner in Literature in 1998. He was born to poor farmer parents in the village of Azinhaga do Ribatejo and an dedicated autodidact. His literary and political heritage is remembered in the José Saramago Foundation in the historic Casa dos Bicos in Lisbon.
