This is done by gathering the leaves together and tying with yarn or raffia to exclude the light and air from the inner leaves which must be done when quite dry or they will rot. Another method is to cover the plants with boards or slats. In three or four weeks they will be blanched. After a shower the boards must be taken off or the plants untied, to allow drying. 410 Broad-leaved Batavian(£jcar(7//f). A favorite salad variety, with wide, wavy leaves edges of which are cut and irregular. Inner leaves blanch nicely to a creamy-white, tender, and of verj' agreeable flavor. One ounce to 100 feet of row. Culture —Plants usually come up small and feebly. Sow seed in good clean loam, in drills 1 foot apart, and thin or transplant to 10 or 12 inches apart in the rows. May be blanched
