Bursitis of the big toe of a 38 year old woman. Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions and lubricates areas where tissues, such as muscles and tendons, move over bone. Bursitis is caused by repetitive movement, trauma or prolonged and excessive pressure on the bursa. Here, the bursitis has occurred over the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint at the base of the big toe due to gardening in ill-fitting boots. Inflammation makes normal movement painful. Treatment is with rest and anti-inflammatory drugs. In severe cases the bursa may need to be drained.
