The wooden buildings within Fort York, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The wooden buildings within Fort York, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Left is the Officers’ Blue Barracks and right is the Number 2 (Centre) Blockhouse – between them the Number 1 (East) Blockhouse can be seen. The stone walls of the fort can be seen left and right. Blockhouses formed the soldiers’ living quarters and was also a defensive stronghold. Note the slits or loopholes with which to fire on an enemy. Built in 1793, Fort York is the birthplace of urban Toronto. The Fort served as the settlement of York’s main harbour defence on Lake Ontario between the 1790s and the 1880s. In the Battle of York, fought here in 1813 British, allied First Nations and Canadian-born settlers together defended their community against US forces. Although that battle was lost, the fort was retaken by the British – and eventually the small settlement of York became the city of Toronto. It was the home of a military garrison until the 1930s. Today it is a 43-acre open, green space near the centre of the city – no longer on the shoreline due to land reclamation. It contains a Napoleonic- or Georgian-era fort containing the largest collection of original War of 1812 buildings in Canada and is a National Historic Site.
