A Cuban woman at her home on a tobacco farm in the Valle de Vinales, Pinar del Río Province, west Cuba Crops are cultivated by using labour-intensive agriculture techniques. Private tobacco growers have owned their tobacco farms, in some cases for generations. Over 90 per cent of the tobacco crop is for the Cuban state. Even though the farms are technically private, the Cuban government is the only tobacco buyer. Tobacco is not a native of Cuba but is believed to have arrived from the Latin Americas between 2000 and 3,000 BC. The new plant was called ‘Cohiba’ and retains that name with the Cohiba brand today which is one of Cuba’s chief exports. Cuban cigars are regarded as the very best in the world. Cuba has excellent tobacco-growing conditions and several hundred years of growing experience
