Sphincter. small, especially in the lowest part of the sphincter. Here usually no meshes were visible but only single muscle fibrillae enclased in the mesogloea (fig. 61). The ecto<lerm of the tentacles is rather high and in expanded state of the tentacles higher than f mesogloea. The longitudinal muscles of the tentacles and radial muscles of the oral disc are ectodermal and weak. The arrangement of the mesenteries is irregular, the mesenteries of certain pairs often show very different sizes. In the section. Kig. 62. Amphianthus nurvegicu^. Section of the body in the region of the artinopliarynx. (fig. 62) of a specimen taken of Bergen and provided with only one pair of directives and one .siphonoglyph I have found 33 pairs of mesenteries, 6 pairs and 4 single mesenteries of which were perfect. Another specimen, provided with .56 mesenteries in the part, had only 4 pairs of mesenteries, including one tli- rective pair, and 3 single mesenteries perfect. In a third specimen with 2 pairs of directives 15 mesenteries, 6 pairs and 3 single mesenteries, were perfect in the uppermost part of the actinopha- rynx. In a fourth specimens with 87 tentacles 56 pairs of mesen- teries were present at the lowest part of the actinoj)harynx, the youngest of them end before they reach the margin. Here 6 pairs were perfect and 5 pairs consisted of one perfect and one imperfect mesentery. The arrangement of these mesenteries was the following: iltl) iltn PP, pi, PP, ip. Pi. pi'. PP, Pi.
