There also exists a deep depressionin the original site of the bone ; there is severepain; and rapid swelling ensues, due to serouseffusion within the joint. Fig. 287. Treatment.—The patella being held in itsabnormal position by the action of the extensormuscles, the apparent indication is to relax as much as possiblethe quadriceps femoris. This is best accomplished by seating thepatient with his body inclined forwards, while the surgeon extendsthe leg upon the thigh, and flexes the limb upon the pelvis, byresting the ankle upon his shoulder.
