Milky Way galactic centre, X-ray image. This mosaic of 88 Chandra X-ray Observatory images is 900 light years across. It shows the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, located 26,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. The X-rays are colour-coded by energy: lower energy (red), medium energy (green), and higher energy (blue). The small dots are black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs. The supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy is the bright region at centre. Also seen are the X-ray sources 1E (centre left) and 1E (far right). This image was published in 2009.
