The bundles of muscle-cells are arrangedto form layers or sheets, as in the digestive tract, or net-works, as in the eye, pleura, etc.^*^- 70- Examined in longitudinal sec- tion, or in considerable masses,it is difficult to distinguish theindividual component fibre-cells, the involuntary musclein such cases closely resemblingfibrous connective tissue ; how-ever, the numerous more orless regularly disposed rod-shaped nuclei, and the absence of the delicate wavy fibres, togetherwith the impression of greater density, usually suffice to establishthe identity of the muscle. Involuntary muscle in transversesection : portions of three bundles arerepresented, separated by areolartissue (a): the nucleated areas aresections of the muscle-cells throughtheir nuclei; the smaller figures repre-sent sections of the cells cut nearer Involuntary muscle in longitudinal section : themuscle-cells are often cut obliquely, and hence appearshorter than when isolated. THE MUSCULAR TISSUES. 6i The connective tissue uniting the larger bundles of muscle-cellssupports the blood-vessels and nerves. The larger blood-vesselsbreak up into capillary net-works, which pass between the muscle-cells. The nerves, derived principally from the sympathetic system, likewise penetrate the intercellular spaces and terminate between thecells in the manner more fully described in the chapter devoted tonerve-endings. Lymphatics occur, as in parts of the digestivetract, closely associated with the muscular tissue. STRIATED OR VOLUNTARY MUSCLE. Striated or voluntary muscle, in addition to the extensive systemattached to the skeleton, supplies the special muscles connected withmany organs, including the tongue, pharynx, middle ear, larynx, upp
