Idlib, Syria. 11 December 2019. Heavy rains and flooding hits camps for internally displaced Syrians near the northern Syrian city of Sarmada, at the Syrian-Turkish border. The harsh winter weather has made the already difficult condition in the camps in the extreme northwest of Syria particularly challenging. Water entered through the tents, while some tents were washed away, with food and water stocks being ruined. Residents are also more exposed to waterborne diseases due to sewage overflowing. Since late April, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began a military offensive to retake the Idlib

Since late April, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began a military offensive to retake the Idlib province, the last major enclave in the country still under the control of the opposition. With the fighting escalating in recent months, several thousands of Syrians have fled the area, with most of them going north to camps along the Turkish border.
