American flag Stars and Stripes next to the British Union Jack. The British established Fort Mackinac in 1780. In 1796 the Americans took over Fort Mackinac, but in July 1812 it was recaptured by the British in the first battle of the War of 1812. In a second battle in 1814, the Americans attacked the fort but were unable to recapture it. After the war, it was finally returned to the United States. The fort remained in operation until 1895.
