Cook in Tierra del Fuego. HMS Resolution (bottom centre) in Christmas Sound, Tierra del Fuego, in December 1774, during the second voyage (1772-75) led by the British explorer Captain James Cook (1728-1779). Tierra del Fuego is a remote group of islands at the southernmost tip of South America. Cook's expedition arrived here after several years exploring the Pacific. They surveyed this area from 20-28 December 1774, recording their observations (such as the bird at lower right). From here, Resolution sailed into the Atlantic, arriving back in Britain in July 1775. This artwork was published in Cook's account of the expedition: 'A voyage towards the South Pole and round the World' (1777).
