Lyman Spitzer (1914-1997). Portrait of the American theoretical physicist and astronomer Lyman Strong Spitzer. Spitzer is most famous for envisioning what would eventually become the Hubble Space Telescope in his 1946 paper Astronomical advantages of an extraterrestrial observatory. In 1965, he was appointed as head of a committee given the task of defining the scientific objectives for a large space telescope. Spitzer also contributed to establishing the fundamentals of the physics of plasmas and the astrophysics of the interstellar medium. The Spitzer Space Telescope was named after him.
