Because of exclusive concessions granted by Brazil to Englishcompanies, we have been unable to extend our cables to the perfection of the Central and South American cable sys-tem I have striven incessantly for forty-six years to gain cablelandings there. The exclusive English concessions referred tohave recently lapsed and, if all goes well, the lines of the Centraland South American Telegraph Company will be landed in Riode Janeiro and in Santos, Brazil, before many months, by authorityof the BraziUan Government.
