The Rising Sun is Setting in Saipan. Coast Guard and Navy invaders display two Japanese flags which fell into their hands as the Emperor's warriors retreated before the overpowering attacks of American forces northward on the island of Saipan in the Marianas. Although the invasion forces suffered losses exceeding those at Tarawa, they were strangling the enemy's surviving defenders this week in a shrinking corner on the north edge of the island.
