The gate from the farmyard into themeadow stood wide open, and all theGeese except the Gray one followed theGander through. The Gray Goose triedto go through a small hole in the fencevery near the gate. She squeezed herhead into it and stretched her neck onthe meadow side of the fence, but shecould not get any farther, although shepushed until she was THE GRAY GOOSE TRIED TO GO THROUGH. I havechosen to go this way. 11 Oh ! said the Nigh Ox, excuse me !Do go through there by all means ! We are going on, called the Gander;we would wait, but the Goslings are ina hurry to take their first bath. Come assoon as you can. The Gray Goose tried harder than everto go the way that she had chosen, but itonly made her so out of breath that shehad to lie down and rest.
