Four horizontal barsmay take the place of the splat back filling, as shown in Fig. 267,or two panels of criss-cross bars mayoccupy the back. A varied top lineto the top slat may suggest itself asindicated in the bottom edge of thefront seat rail. Some old Englishsettees had a bunker space immedi-ately under a hinged seat, where acroquet set would be at hand ifwanted. This could very well takeup the space down to cross strainerson the ends. Well selected timbershould be used, cypress being goodwood for the front and back posts,as it withstands rotting better thanmost woods. If it is possible the back postsshould be secured from a patterndrawn within a surface of 3 x 5 x 40in. and the front post within a sur-face of 3 X 4 X 25 in. drawing and cutting out patterns toshapes shown. They can then be marked out on a plank 3in. thick with a reasonable reference to position of grain.
