He rang the bell for a motorman instantly switched the current off andapplied the brake, but in vain, for the car continued onits way with skidding wheels and toppled over into theriver, crashing through the ice front end of the passengers who were able clambered outof the car upon the ice, the others were rescued by fire-men. The conductor and one other man had jumped.
