Jost Hites old home may be seen to-day a fewmiles southwest of Winchester, as one comes up WILLIAM BYRD AND PETER JONES 99 the Valley Pike. Many of the Hites and Bow-mans, descendants of Jost Hite, were prominentin colonial and Revolutionary days. And only amile or two east of Staunton one may see the oldhome and the grave of John Lewis. A part ofthe house he built there, old Fort Lewis, is still. FORT LEWIS, NEAR STAUNTON Standing; and, like much of the sturdy pioneerswork, it bids fair to stand for years to stalwart sons, Thomas, Andrew, William, andCharles, were great leaders after him. Theywere friends and associates of Washington, andthe statue of Andrew Lewis is one of those thatsurround the statue of Washington on CapitolSquare in Richmond. 100 A HISTORY OF VIRGINIA Winchester, in early times, was for several yearsthe headquarters of Washington. Staunton, inrecent years, has gained renown because WoodrowWilson was born there. FACTS TO REMEMBER 1. William Byrd, the first famous Virginia author bornin Virginia, was the founder of Richmond and Petersburg. 2. Peter Jones had a trading station on the Appomattox,and Petersburg was named in his honor. 3. In 1732 and 1733, while Byrd was laying ofF Richmondand Petersburg, Winchester and Staunton were being started. 4. Germans under Jost Hite began the settlements aroundShawnee
