It is, as we should expect, in Santa Sofia that the richness ofsculptural decoration reaches its height; but even here the sculptureacanthus still forms the motive of the ornament, and it is °^ ^- ^°^*only by its freer treatment and the character of the forms to whichit is applied that the style of decoration departs from the few instances are seen of the basket capital which is so commonin the buildings of Italy, where the hand of the Byzantine sculptor isfelt, and only here and there a stilt-block is employed. The decora-tion is extremely abundant and rich, but much less varied in designthan is the case in later buildings, the classic principle of continuitystill apparently governing the architects.
