BAGAN, Myanmar - Dating to 1334, Thisa-wadi Temple (also spelled Thissa-wadi Temple) is a small, partially renovated temple in the Bagan Archeological Zone in Bagan, Myanmar (Burma). Despite its relatively small size, it has terraces that can be accessed for views over the plain of Bagan.

The Thisa-wadi Temple, located in the eastern part of Bagan's vast Archaeological Zone in Myanmar, is a significant example of the transitional period in Bagan architecture. Built in the 13th century, during the latter years of the Pagan Kingdom, this temple showcases a blend of early and late Bagan architectural styles, making it particularly interesting for scholars and enthusiasts of Burmese religious architecture. The temple's name, "Thisa-wadi," has historical significance, though the exact meaning and origin are subjects of ongoing research. Its location in the eastern part of Bagan, away from the more densely populated central plains, has contributed to its preservation and offers visitors a more serene experience of Bagan's cultural landscape. Constructed primarily of brick, like most Bagan temples, Thisa-wadi features a unique design that incorporates elements from different periods of Bagan architecture. The structure likely includes a central shrine surrounded by corridors, typical of many Bagan temples. However, its specific layout and decorative elements would reflect the evolving architectural tastes and religious practices of the late Pagan period. One of the notable aspects of Thisa-wadi Temple is its potential to showcase the transition in architectural styles that occurred during the later years of the Pagan Kingdom. This may be evident in the form of the temple, the design of its entrances and windows, and the decorative elements used both inside and outside the structure. The exterior of the temple would likely feature stucco work, a common decorative technique in Bagan architecture. These stucco decorations often depict Buddhist motifs, celestial beings, and scenes from the Jataka tales (stories of the Buddha's previous lives). The level of preservation of these decorative elements can vary, but they offer valuable insights into the artistic traditions of the period. Inside the temple, there may be remnants of origin
