View NE of the rock-shelter (Abri de Cro-Magnon) at Les Eyzies, Dordogne, France, where in 1868 remains of the earliest form of modern humans in Europe were first found. Named Cro-Magnon after the find spot, these early Homo sapiens sapiens were associated with the Aurignacian flint industry used in the Early Upper Palaeolithic around 30,000 years ago. The shelter was used as a campsite by Aurignacians before becoming a a burial place: remains of at least three men, one woman & a new-born baby were found. The 'old man' was no more than 45 years of age. Later, c. 25-17,000 years ago, the shelter was used by another Cro-Magnon group called Gravettians.
