Professional artists of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, William Smallwood Winder (1869 - 1910) and May Chatteris Winder née Fisher (1874 - 1910). William, a landscape painter whose paintings of the English Lake District are still on sale, was elected as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1903 and exhibited at the Royal Academy. May was a published artist as an illustrator of children's books, known professionally as May Chatteris Fisher prior to her marriage to William in 1904 and as May Chatteris Winder afterwards. In 1901 and 1904, May illustrated two books of children's fairy tales for the publishers Sherratt & Hughes: 'Ignoramus' by E. Todd and 'Pixie' by Frances Reddaway, respectively. She continued to work after her marriage and the birth of her only child, Arthur, in 1905. Both William and May were founding members of the Lake Artists' Society, established in October 1904 by a group of painters brought together by their love of the English Lake District landscape. After their marriage, William and May lived on the edge of the Lake District, at Staveley, near Kendal, Cumbria (formerly Westmorland).
