Ancient Wonder of the World, Tomb of Mausolus

Etching of the Tomb of Mausolus from the series: The Seven Wonders of the World (plate 5) by Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630) Italy, published 1610. This tomb was built about 350 BC at Halicarnassus for King Mausolus of Caria by his widow, Artemisia. It was one of the seven wonders of the world. Designed by the architect and sculptor Pythis, it was richly adorned by Scopas and other noted sculptors. So great was the fame of this tomb that to our own day all large and imposing burial places are called 'mausoleums' after the ancient king whose bones rested here.
