Diesel engines for land and marine work . THE FUTURE OF THE DIESEL ENGINE 339 Diesel electric locomotive, of which much may be expectedin the future, will be a type in which alternating currentdynamos and motors will be employed, working on oneof the many systems which have been proposed. The problem of the construction of a Diesel-driven loco-motive is perhaps of greater complexity than any other inconnexion with this motor, and certainly the difficultiesencountered are far in excess of those connected with theapplication to marine work. Although it must at present be considered only in anexperimental aspect, a large locomotive has been constructedby Messrs. .Sulzer Bros., driven by a Diesel engme. A. Hd/ Fig. 171.—Diagram illustrating Arrangement of Sulzer Diesel Locomotive. four-cylinder two-cycle single-acting motor is employed, thearrangement adopted being to have the engine with cylinderscoupled in pairs at an angle of 90°, driving on to an inter-mediate crank shaft between the two driving shafts. Thecranks are at 180°, and it is stated that good balancing isobtained. The scavenge pumps, of which there are two, areseparate from the engine cyluiders and are driven by leversfrom the connecting rods ; they are placed between the twopairs of cylinders, being vertical and arranged order to provide a good starting torque and to help theengine up gradients, an auxiliary air-compressor is provided, driven by a vertical two-cylinder two-cycle Diesel engme, thecompressor consisting of two horizontal cylinders. When 340 DIESEL ENGINES FOR LAND AND MARINE WORK greater power is required compressed air from this compressorand more fuel are supplied to the working cylind
