Laryngoscopy. Illustration showing the use of a laryngoscope, a type of endoscope used to examine the larynx. There are several types of laryngoscope; this one is a rigid laryngoscope, used when the patient is under general anaesthetic for examining the larynx and also for intubation. This is the process of passing an endotracheal tube (breathing tube) into the trachea if a patient requires mechanical ventilation. The laryngoscope depresses the tongue and provides a good view of the larynx and a clear passage to the trachea.
