Bust of Dom Ferdinand II (1816-1885) 19th-century King of Portugal, inside the Pena Palace, Sintra, Portugal. In 1838 Ferdinand acquired the former monastery of our Lady of Pena, built in 1511 above Sintra and unoccupied since 1834. In 1843 the King began enlarging the palace, building a new wing. The new Palace completed in 1854 and grounds were classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995 and has become a popular tourist attraction.
