Entirely distinct from all other perennials in the peculiar formation as well as the color of the flowers, which are of large size, about 4 inches across, of a peculiar reddish pur- ple, with a remarkably large cone-shaped centre of brown, thickly set with golden tips in spiral lines; forms bushy plants from 2 to 3 feet high, and blooms from July to October.
