(2/3) Capt. Nathan Hoeger, commander of the 186th Military Police Company, holds up an information card meant to inform Soldiers on reporting options and safe steps to take in the event of a sexual assault or harassment incident outside the Iowa National Guard Joint Force Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa, on April 8, 2022. During Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, Hoeger was recognized by his peers for implementing effective training and raising awareness to fight back against sexual violence in Iowa's ranks. “Another idea we came up with is a card. We worked with the state Sexual Assault Response Coordinator and we now have an inspectable item that every Soldier in the company keeps on them. It has all of the victim advocates in our chain of command and their phone numbers. On the other side of the card, there are the different types of reporting. If something were to happen to them, the card has what they need to do. The last two months, I've seen team leaders with their platoon and they're quizzing the whole platoon on what's on their card, unprompted. Noncommissioned officers are starting conversations, asking Soldiers how they would react to certain situations. Then they go deeper and explore why they think they would react in those ways. It’s hard to admit you’d have a really hard time intervening. It’s uncomfortable, but if you address those topics and talk about it more, Soldiers will become more comfortable and feel empowered to intervene if something happens.”
