London Ontario, Canada - December 23, 2011. Dr. Chil-Yong Kang of the University of Western Ontario is photographed inside his lab. On December 20, 2011 Dr. Kang revealed this his HIV/AIDS preventative vaccine (SAV001) had been approved by the United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to proceed to human clinical trials. The drug will go through three different trial phases with the first starting in January 2013 on 40 individuals. To date HIV/AIDS has killed more than 28 million people and more than 35 million people are presently living with the disease. If successful in the trials SAV001 will be the first preventative HIV/AIDS vaccine.
