General Horatio Gates, afterwards the victor of Saratoga, an Englishman havingproperty in America, who at the time of the out-break of hostilities was on the retired list of the RoyalAmericans or Sixtieth, and was drawing half-pay onthe English Establishment. Gates and Charles Lee by-and-by became activeamong the worst of the enemies of Washington. Ofthe other Generals mention is necessary of NathanielGreene the Quaker of Rhode Island, and RichardMontgomery, an Irishman who, like Washington, hadserved under the royal flag in the winning of NorthAmerica from the French. At the time of Washing-tons appointment, Schuyler and Montgomery were inthe back country, watching the line of the Hudsonnorthwards to Lake Champlain. The latter afterwardsfell in his attempt to capture Quebec.
