This series of images are of the mountains near the Swiss resort town of Zermatt seen here from the Schoenbiel Hut looking towards the giant triangular wedge of the famous Matterhorn mountain with nearly all of the mountains mountaineering routes in profile. On the left is the Hoernli Ridge, moving right is the North face route, then the sharp ridge in the middle is the Zmutt Grat ridge then the Italian Ridge on the right. The mountain was first climbed by the Hoernli Ridge 14 July 1865 by a British party of 7 led by Edward Wymper and friends Lord Francis Douglas, Rev Charles Hudson, Douglas Hadow plus Swiss mountain guides Micheal Croz, Peter Taugwalder and his son also Peter. The ascent was successful but on the descent a tragic accident occurred when just below the summit one of the party slipped and dragged others with him. The thin rope broke and Michel Croz along with Hadow, Hudson, Douglas all fell the entire length of the north face to their deaths. The body of Lord Francis Douglas was never recovered and he remains interred somewhere on the Matterhorn.
