A bull caribou follows his harem in the Alaska tundra during the autumn rut.
The Nelchina herd winters north of the Alaska Range. Earlier in the year the Nelchina caribou herd gather in the foothills of the Talkeetna Mountains in Interior Alaska. This is the calving grounds and summer range for the Nelchina herd. The Nelchina herd currently has a 20 year population high with than 48,700 animals, according to a state survey from July 2016.
