Ratargul Reservoir is a freshwater reservoir in Bangladesh located at Goainghat in Sylhet. Ratargul was once thought to be the only wetland in Bangladesh. But later, more wetlands named Jugirkandi Mayavan, Bujir Forest and Lakshmi Baur wetlands were found in Bangladesh. "Ratargul Lagoon" is one of the only 22 freshwater wetlands in the world. The area of this wetland is 3, acres. It is also known as Ratargul Swamp Forest. Its 504-acre area was declared a wildlife sanctuary by the Bangladesh government in 1973. Also on 31 May 2015 Bangladesh Forest Department declared hectares of forest land as Special Biodiversity Conservation Area. This area is also referred to as Special Biodiversity Conservation Area (Ratargul). This evergreen forest is located on the banks of Goain river (Goain river joins Sari Goain river and connects it with Chengir canal. Karach tree (scientific name: Millettia pinnata) grows here. The vegetation here is under water for 4 to 7 months in a year. During monsoons This forest is submerged under 20-30 feet of water. Rest of the year, the water level is around 10 feet. During the monsoons, the forest remains waterlogged for four months. Then the small canals become footpaths. And then the water shelters the forest department. In bills, aquatic animals take refuge there. The forest is located south of the river Gwain, in the Fatehpur union of Goainghat in Sylhet district. On the southern side of the forest there are again two haors: Shimul Bil Haor and Newa Bil Haor. Its distance from Sylhet city is 26 km. The murta or pati tree is known as "Rata tree" in the local language of Sylhet. The name of this forest is Ratargul after that Rata tree. Two vegetation layers are observed in this characteristic freshwater wetland. The upper layer consists mainly of woody plants, while the lower layer has an abundance of thick foliage (murta).
