Mr. Richards was en-gaged in business, him-self, until 1872, when heretired from active work,and with his family, madea long visit to Europe. Onhis return from abroad, hewas induced to take theposition of director in theMetropolitan Railroad Co.;this position he held foreight months, when he waschosen President of thecorporation. The direc-tors were desirous of hav-ing a man at the head ofthe corporation whose ex-ecutive ability had beenproven by his former suc-cess in life.
