The church of ST. JAMES consistsCHURCH of a chancel 1 5 ft. 10 in. by 13 ft. 10 in. without a chancel arch, continuous witha nave 32 ft. 8 in. long, a north aisle 7 ft. 2 in. wide,a south porch and a timber bell-turret at the Plan of Litchfield Church The 12th-century building on the site consisted ofa nave one bay shorter eastwards than at present, with a south aisle divided off by an arcade of twobays; now blocked, the aisle being destroyed. Theremay have been at first a chancel narrower than thenave, but if so it has left no trace, and the presentchancel was added c. 1190, having its eastern baycovered with a stone vault. About the year 1200 anaisle of two bays was added on the north side of thenave, and shortly afterwards an east bay was added toboth nave arcades, that on the north opening to thesite of a former north-east vestry. There may havebeen a similar vestry or chapel at the east of the southaisle. The whole building underwent a restoration in1875, the walls being then refaced, and at the sametime the south porch was added and the north aislerebuilt. In the east wall of the chancel is a short andrather wide 12th-century window, with its roundhead
