Raglan Castle, Raglan, Monmouthshire, South Wales. UK

Raglan Castle is located 7 miles south west of Monmouth and is one of the most impressive of any of the castles in South Wales. Unlike the other castles located to the north, Raglan Castle was not built with a singleminded military intent. Instead it was more a statement of wealth and social aspiration. Work on the castle did not start until 1435, almost 200 years after the mighty fortresses to the north. Work started in 1435 when Sir William ap Dafydd started construction of the Great Tower. Upon his death, his son William Herbert continued work on the castle creating a lavish palace with formal apartments and a Great Gatehouse. More changes took place in the mid-16th century when the castle was pressed into active service. For a castle not built specifically for war it acquitted itself well having endured one of the longest sieges in the Civil War in 1646 before falling to Cromwell and his demolition teams.
