Rotary rocket in orbit. Computer illustration of the Roton rotary rocket in orbit with its helicopter blades deployed. This revolutionary design is far lighter than conventional rockets due to its unique engine. Unlike normal rockets, it does not have a single combustion chamber with weighty pumps feeding the fuel in. Instead it has a 7 metre wide rotating disc with 96 small combustion chambers around it, into which the fuel is thrown by the force of the disc's rotation. The rotor blades on the craft's nose are used to slow and stabilise its descent in the manner of a helicopter. Roton has been designed by the Rotary Rocket Company, based in California, USA.
