After a distinguished service of twenty-six years in India, Sir Edward Lugard was compelled by severe indisposition to quit the country and return to England, when her Majesty was pleased to promote him to the rank of Major-General. This promotion removes him from the high appointment he held in India, and for a time places him out of employ'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858.
