Huts and furnaces spring up on the shore as ifby magic. They catch them either by spearing, or diving andseizing them in the hands. As soon as they are brought ashorethey are boiled, then flattened with stones, and spread out on bam-boo nets to dry. When dry they are smoked, and are then supposedto be fit to eat, though one traveler, who did not like them, saysthey look like sausages rolled in the mud and then thrown up thechimney. Onethat is found on the Atlantic coast, is a beautiful crimson color,with a wreath of tentacles exquisite as the most beautiful sea weeds. Naturalists call these curious fellows Holothuria, and here is apicture of one of the humble relatives of the beautiful creature inthe other picture.
