Proceeding by the new military road up the Gardiner River Canon,through the Golden Gate and Kingmans Pass, and by the beautiful Falls of theWest Gardiner, our typical tourist, comfortably seated in a canvas-covered car-riage, with an experienced driver, thoroughly familiar with the various pointsof interest that follow each other with such marvelous rapidity, soon reaches alofty plateau, which commands some exceedingly beautiful mountain scenery,including Electric Peak, Cinnabar Mountain and Bunsens Peak to the north,. WINTER SCENES IN THE YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK. WONDERLAND. 29 and three lofty peaks, all upward of 10,000 feet high, to the west. This ispresently followed by the famous Obsidian Cliffs, a mountain of volcanic remarkable formation—entirely new to nineteen out of every twenty visit-ors—bears a close resemblance to jet ; although at places it is mottled andstreaked with red, as well as with various shades of brown and olive road over which we travel is, for some distance, nothing less than a glasshighway, probably the only one in the world. Its construction was accom-plished by building great fires upon the largest detached blocks, which weresuddenly cooled and, at the same time, shivered into fragments by the dashingof cold water upon them. The first of the distinctly marked areas in which the geysers are found is theNorris Basin.
