Landscaped gardens and palace of King Ludwig II's Schloss Linderhof, Bavaria, Germany

Schloss Linderhof is one of several castles/palaces built by Bavaria's eccentric King Ludwig II in the late 19th century. Dazzling frescoes, enormous crystal chandeliers, gleaming mirrors and gold leaf are the order of the day in this amazingly ostentatious building, inspired by one of Ludwig’s idols – the French sun king Louis XIV. In June 1886, conspirators within Ludwig’s own family and the Bavarian cabinet had him arrested on the grounds of insanity. The next day, the bodies of Ludwig and his psychiatrist were discovered in the shallow waters of Lake Starnberg near Munich. At the time, it was claimed Ludwig had murdered the doctor and then committed suicide, but other theories persist to this day. In fact, as recently as 2007 there were calls for his body to be exhumed as evidence emerged that he may have been shot.
