Regarding the marriage of Tom Scott, and includes speculation that Arthur Mason and Jane Gibson are secretly married. Transcription: evening, he [Thomas Fogarty] being off for Charleston on Monday. Out with him to visit Tom Scott, the light haired, fairfaced, Saxon looking good humoured English young fellow, who whilome boarded at Holts [168 Duane St.] ? he having gotten married. I suppose he ?s not seventeen. Sat awhile conversing with him in Clinton street sky-parlor; then parting with Fogarty in the Bowery, to [174] Mulberry Street. There, with Mr [Joseph] Greatbatch and the rest till half past ten or so, then back and to bed. Wonder Alf Waud don ?t write. 12. Sunday. In doors till evening, rain storms intermittent out of doors, drawing and loneliness within. Called at Mrs [Rebecca] Kidders at about 8 or so, sat awhile talking with her, Pope, and twain others. [Arthur] Mason in his room with Jane Gibson. Shouldn ?t wonder if he was married to her, though he was after no good ? if it prove matrimony I ?m right. Left, and through a thick clammy mist, the rain rising upwards to Mulberry Street for brief space. Then a meditative pipe to Reade Street Shades, glass of ale there. From thence the fire bells tolling a scamper into Water Street, a locality, I think, particularly favourable to fires. Multitudinous red shirts and engines, but as it proved, little need of them, so back through the rheumatic mist thoughtfully, and to garret-bed. 13. Monday. Letters from Mr [Henry] Hart and Dillon [Mapother]. / At work on full length of [Thomas] Picton en costume Garde National ? finished it. Fogarty called ?he off on the morrow. Commenced drawing for the Picayune apropos of New York Volunteers, dying in Hospital & subsequently sumptuos funeral array.
