In doors till evening, rain storms intermittent out of doors, drawing and loneliness within. Called at Mrs [Rebecca] Kidders at about 8 or so, sat awhile talking with her, Pope, and twain others. [Arthur] Mason in his room with Jane Gibson. Shouldn ?t wonder if he was married to her, though he was after no good ? if it prove matrimony I ?m right. Left, and through a thick clammy mist, the rain rising upwards to Mulberry Street for brief space. Then a meditative pipe to Reade Street Shades, glass of ale there. From thence the fire bells tolling a scamper into Water Street, a locality, I think, particularly favourable to fires. Multitudinous red shirts and engines, but as it proved, little need of them, so back through the rheumatic mist thoughtfully, and to garret-bed. 13. Monday.
