Theinside wire is intended as the contact wire for the current col-lector, the outside wire as a reinforcement of the cross sectionor conductivity of the line. The outside wire, having a some-what greater sag, is less likely to break, and will therefore con-stitute a safety suspension for the inside wire in case the lattershould break near a support, it being then held above theground by the interconnecting links just mentioned. The sameprinciple of mutual safety suspension has been adopted forroad crossings of small importance (Fig. 6). You will alsofind two different forms of inverted catenary suspension,which have so far given excellent results (Figs. 4 and 5). Thissuspension has been used on about 5/4 km of length. Duringthese last days, when the weather was very cold, the trolley orcontact wire supported on these catenaries was so straight thatthe
