But to be perfect and a pleasure to walk on this should have a firm yet elastic and carpet-like surface, and the first consideration in laying out or renovating old grounds should be to secure this condition. Turfing with fine old pasture sod, at one time a popular method of making a lawn, is now largely superseded by seed- ing, because of the expense and difficulty in obtaining good, clean turf.
