Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that normally affects the lungs, but can also affect other body tissues. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It was a widespread cause of disability and death before the use of a vaccine (from 1921) and antibiotics (from 1944).
